UPDATE: The Book Rating Scale has been discontinued as of July 2013. All previously rated books will retain their rating.
In 2010, I implemented a rating system. This scale is in no way meant to be malicious or mean spirited; it is simply a comprehensive means to share my point of view with readers. This system is on a 10 point scale with half points assigned if a book is situated between two ratings.
10 – As I turned the last page I felt as if I was losing a faithful companion and friend. Among the best books I’ve ever read. This book spoke to me, changed me, and, will be an immediate addition to my personal collection.
9 – I couldn’t put this book down and yet I feared that it would end too soon. I carved out extra reading time just so I could finish it. This book was read over meals, read at work, almost got me hit by a car as I tried to cross the street reading, and kept me from much needed beauty sleep. I will be adding this book to my annual re-read list.
8 –An excellent read that gave me something to look forward to at the end of a long day. A perfect story to help me unwind and to temporarily lose myself in another world. This is a book I will be recommending to all my friends.
7-A good and easy read, but somewhat predictable. I would recommend this for some light reading. Offered me temporary entertainment, but not profound or life changing.
6 – So-so. Some parts of this book were enjoyable, but other parts were a real yawner. Cookie-cutter and not enough character development for there to be a real connection with the reader.
5 – Had some serious flaws that distracted me from enjoyment: storyline felt fragmented or lacked flow, very predictable, cookie-cutter, no connection with the characters.
4 – A blah read that felt like it was going nowhere slowly. Whatever redeemable aspects there were to this book, the author made no attempt to pursue or acknowledge them.
3 – There was little to nothing enjoyable about this book: the characters were one-dimensional, the storyline was forced or didn’t exist, too many issues were unresolved or resolved simply for sake of ending the book.
2 -1-0- The only purpose this book will serve is to prop up the wobbly end of my bookcase so that the books that earned a coveted position won’t fall off. I could not waste another precious moment finishing it when I could be reading something else.
