At this point in her life, bravery is not a trait Willa Hart would readily claim. She believes her seven-year-old daughter, Savannah, who never knew her father and successfully tackled chemotherapy, is truly the courageous one. Yet after Willa has a fateful encounter with handsome young doctor Patrick McCade, her outlook—and her view of herself—begins to change.
Patrick, a thrill-seeking world traveler and temporary resident of Lenox, Oregon, sets out to show Willa the value of adventure, even within her tiny town. But just when their friendship shows signs of turning into something more, Patrick’s life as a traveling doctor calls him back. Will his last days in town signal the end of their journey, or will Patrick and Willa find the courage to transform a single season into a lifetime?
There has been a drought of contemporary romances on my reading docket over the past few months, but I can happily declare that the rains (and a few tears) have come! A Season to Love surprised me with its poignant story and illustrious writing. First and foremost the story of a young widow and mother whose life is figuratively paralyzed by the debilitating fear, this novel is unflinching in its exploration of life after “happily ever after” falls apart. Readers will immediately be enamoured with Willa and her resilient daughter Savannah as they try to reclaim a normal life after years of emotional and physical chaos. Willa is tormented by her inability to control her susceptibility to tragedy and has sentenced herself to a life of mundane existence as a means for protection…at least until an adventuresome doctor with an uncanny ability to see through her defences comes to town.
Lest you wonder about the swoon worthy moments so pivotal to this genre, do not fret! Deese gifts readers with an exhilarating romance fostered by authentic friendship, mutual attraction and self-sacrifice. Patrick’s philosophy on life is the antithesis of Willa’s fanaticism for safety, but he respects her boundaries. He nurtures and supports her towards healing instead of pressuring her to recklessly abandon her fears without first resolving the root issues. Now that’s chivalry!
As charming and soulful as the small town in which it is set, A Season to Love is a must-read for contemporary romance fans, particularly if you enjoy the likes of Denise Hunter and Susan May Warren. Nicole Deese has won over a faithful reader!
