In this sequel to the bestselling Doon, Mackenna realizes she made a horrible mistake–choosing to follow her dreams of Broadway instead of staying in the enchanted land of Doon. To make everything worse, she’s received her Calling–proof she and Duncan are each other’s one true love–and it’s pure torment, especially when visions of the very alluring Scottish prince appear right before she goes onstage.
So when Duncan tells her an ancient curse threatens to overtake Doon and the new queen needs her help, Kenna doesn’t have to think twice. With darkness closing in on all sides, Kenna and Vee battle a world of nightmares in order to protect the kingdom. But it will take the ultimate test of courage for Kenna to salvage her happily ever after.
Destined for Doon is the sequel to Inspy Award nominated Doon, accompanying best friends Kenna and Vee as they travel through time and realms to the enchanted land of Doon (inspired by Gene Kelly’s Brigadoon). The story finds Vee established as monarch over the kingdom and Kenna regretting her fateful decision to pursue the stage on Broadway, separated from her dear friend and the man she is destined to love forever. When Vee’s reign as queen is threatened, Kenna hastens to her side to vanquish an impending curse.
Both contemporary and historical, romantic and fantastical, Destined for Doon is a fully engaging adventure that tickles the imagination with sweeting landscapes, poetic Scottish brogues, thrilling romance and treacherous bewitchment. Front and centre is the covetable and admirable friendship that Vee and Kenna nurture at all costs. Their loyalty to each other is uncommon among female characters in young adult fiction, and I commend Carey and Lorie for keeping this relationship strong and true. The alternating points of view are an all encompassing method of story telling that allows both tenacious protagonists to thrive and mature.
Unfortunately for the impatient reader in me, Destined for Doon concludes on a breathless cliffhanger that usurps the notion of happily ever after–there is clearly much more story to tell! With all due respect Carey and Lorie, HURRY UP and write! I am anxiously awaiting the next instalment.
