One of my favourite romantic suspense series of the moment is Dani Pettrey’s Alaskan Courage, so I am absolutely thrilled to welcome the author herself to The Overweight Bookshelf during her promotion tour for Silenced (Alaskan Courage #4).

About Silencebook review silenced dani pettreyd

A relaxing day of rock climbing takes a disturbing turn when Kayden McKenna’s route leads her to a face-to-face encounter with a dead climber. Is it a terrible accident or something sinister? When the case is handed to the overburdened sheriff, he turns to Jake Westin. With Jake’s past now revealed, he’s ready to use his talent for investigation again-–but he could never prepare for where the case will take him.

Kayden and Jake soon realize that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is on to them. When strange things begin happening in Yancey, Jake is terrified that once again his world may put someone he loves in danger.

But the truth is far worse than either of them imagine.

There has been a 3 book build up to this moment! Have you known where Kayden and Jake’s story was going the whole time or did Silenced surprise you?

I knew before I started Silenced how it was going to end, well, overall how it was going to end, which is unique for me. I typically don’t know the ending when I begin, but I had this image in my mind of what Jake and Kayden were going to have to overcome to be together happily ever after.

Kayden’s emotional walls could have alienated readers if not handled right, but instead I was championing her the whole time. Was it difficult to flesh her out as a character and get in to her mind and heart?

That’s a great question. It wasn’t difficult fleshing her out as a character. Kayden has a very distinct personality. What was difficult was trying to naturally show why she is the way she is. To make sure those glimpses of her heart felt real and a genuine part of the story.

What do you admire most about Kayden?

I admire her immense depth of love for her family. She’s not always the best at expressing her feelings, but they are extremely strong. I also feel her mixture of strength (both inside and out) and vulnerability underneath it all is quite admirable and intriguing.

What do you admire most about Jake?

His devotion and love for Kayden regardless if she ever returns his affections or not.

Did you attempt any rock climbing for research’s sake?

I sure did, but it was actually for an earlier manuscript and was at an indoor climbing gym. My family and I loved it! We’ve been back numerous times.  Can’t wait until the grandbaby is old enough to join us.

If readers walk away from Silenced with one message, what do you hope it would be?

I think Jake sums it up best:

When can we expect to have Reef’s story in our impatient hands?

LOL! Thank you so much for your impatience. I love that you can’t wait to get your hands on Reef’s story. It will be out February 1st. Hope you’ll really enjoy it!

Why did you choose to write romantic suspense (aside from the obvious fact that you excel at them!)?

I love writing inspirational romantic suspense because it incorporates so many things I love–the thrill of adventure, nail-biting suspense, the deepening of one’s faith and plenty of romance. For me it’s the perfect combination.

Do you have any writing quirks, habits or rituals?

My husband is laughing hysterically over this one. He bought me a really adorable sign for Christmas last year that sits over my desk and reads ‘Brilliantly Quirky.’ I think my entire writing process is quirky but it works for me. I write all my first drafts longhand and prefer cute notebooks and fun colored pens. I always make a collage of my characters, story and setting during the first section of my first draft to refer to for inspiration.

As far as habits or rituals…I need to have a good cup of coffee and piece of dark chocolate at my side. Probably not the healthiest habit, but yum!

Which authors have impacted you most as a reader and writer?

Dee Henderson has impacted me the most as both a reader and a writer. I’m a huge fan of hers. Have been for years. A number of years back (close to a decade now) Dee became a writing mentor. She’s absolutely amazing! She’s not only a wonderful writer, but a lovely person. I’m extremely blessed to know her.

Many thanks to Dani for answering my nosy questions. Don’t forget to check your favourite book retailer for this thrilling series!
