About the Book

So when she nearly dies in a fire due to equipment failure, she knows something is up. Ordered to take time off while the investigation continues, Alexia makes a last-minute decision to recuperate at her mother’s home and attend her high school reunion. Yet trouble seems to be following her, and within hours of arriving home she’s involved with murder, arson–and a handsome detective. But the conflicts ahead are nothing compared to the ghosts of her past. As she strives to remember and forgive her family history, she must also decide if the secret she’s been guarding for the last ten years must finally come to light.
Chock-full of the suspense and romantic tension readers have come to expect from Lynette Eason, When the Smoke Clears is the explosive first book in the Deadly Reunions series.
Lynette Eason’s first book in the Deadly Reunions series is packed full of of fast-paced action and adrenaline pumping suspense. In spite of the what the cover alludes to, the action happens away from the line of fire on the job and in to the line of fire at home.
Alexia’s backstory gave this story the emotional connection that readers crave in the midst of the chaos and upheaval in which she finds herself. Her dysfunctional upbringing has present day ramifications that shade her life decisions and reactions. Through a series of encounters with other characters and a love interest with detective Hunter, Alexia stops running from her past and accepts that those old wounds can be healed through God’s perfect love.
The number of murder attempts on Alexia’s life were daunting, but not completely believable. It became expected that something else was going to happen to place her in danger. At one point it felt like that was the only plot focus-placing Alexia in one precarious situation after another. That being said, the suspense was continuous and did build throughout the novel with clever twists to keep readers on their toes. Eason cleverly used well placed character smokescreens to throw suspicion from person to person without tipping her hand. The cliff hanger at the end will certainly have me tuning in to the sequel to discover the fate of these characters.
