About the Book
An unsolved mystery separates ex-privateersman Captain Brogan Talvis from his lost son–his only living relation, his only family. Shortly before her tragic demise, his wife abandoned their infant to strangers, refusing to reveal the child’s whereabouts. Now, three years later, Brogan has discovered the boy at the home of a shipbuilder’s daughter, Lorena Huntley.
Lorena guards a dark secret about her young charge. She finds herself falling for the heroic captain who has come to claim his newly built ship, unaware his motive for wooing her is to befriend the boy he plans on reclaiming as his own–until the day another’s evil deceit leaves her helplessly shipbound, heading toward England.
As the perfect opportunity to reclaim his son unfolds, Brogan is haunted by thoughts of Lorena in her dire circumstance, and he is forced to make a heartrending choice between his child and the woman who has begun to capture his heart. But only his unselfish sacrifice can win him the greatest prize of all–love.
Oh to be able to sail away into the sunset with a hero like Captain Brogan Talvis. Uniform? Check. Bad boy privateer? Check. Devoted father and romantic? Check, check. Tortured soul in need of some tender loving care? Enlist me now!
In all seriousness, Brogan’s storyline was truly poignant and heart wrenching. An orphan who was devalued and tormented throughout his childhood only to be betrayed later in life and deprived of the only family he has known, he is on a mission to reclaim the son that was taken from him. He is willing (and planning) to use coercion and deception until he meets Drew’s new family and observes the obvious love and care they have for his son. What ensues is a journey of healing and growth as he experiences
Lorena’s character had a wonderful duality: the refined lady meets mothering homemaker. She is not one to be commanded about or have her actions dictated by the men in her life. Her gentle spirit and iron will lead to engaging interactions with Brogan and Drew.
Lisa descriptive prowess brings life to the societal context and industry setting. The plot had good continuous action and carried suspense well. The end held a shocking twist that was truly unexpected and well concealed. While I would have liked to see the conflict in the middle of the novel flushed out more, I found the Lisa kept the anticipation for the climax building.
