About the Book
Amish genre books and I have a complicated relationship. I try to go in without any preconceived notions but ultimately walk away at the end feeling…apathetic? Underwhelmed? Meh? I keep trying over and over because I feel like I should love the genre that is consistently top selling in the Christian market, but when push comes to shove, all the stories feel and sound the same to me. There have been a few exceptions to this gut reaction, but for the most part when I see a bonnet cover on a bookstore shelf, I move on.
Dale Cramer is definitely an exception to the rule. I am completely captivated by this series and The Captive Heart does not disappoint. Cramer brings a storyline that is fresh and engaging to a genre that is not renowned for its risks. This vivid story is full of action (YES! ACTION!), drama, intrigue, and romance. It cannot even be criticized by hard core Amish purists for being inauthentic to the genre because Cramer drew inspiration directly from his family’s history!vThe overarching theme of this book is “How far would you go and how much would you sacrifice to save the ones you love?” John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
In addition to the strong plot elements, Cramer’s literary style is descriptive and emotive. He relentlessly plays your heart strings with bow of his words. His calibre of writing is a welcome addition to my reading pile.
