About the Book
With nothing to their names, young widow Rosa Garner and her mother-in-law return to Texas and the family ranch. Only now the county is demanding back taxes and the women have only three months to pay.
Though facing eviction, Rosa can’t keep herself from falling in love with the countryside and the wonderful extended family who want only her best. Learning the American customs is not easy, however, and this beautiful young widow can’t help but catch wandering eyes. Where some offer help with dangerous strings attached, only one man seems honorable. But when Weston Garner, still grieving his own lost love, is unprepared to give his heart, to what lengths will Rosa go to save her future?
Sixty Acres and a Bride is a fresh reconceptualization of the biblical account of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz. Regina Jennings is a masterful wordsmith that infuses life and authenticity into this story and her characters. I adored how sensory her writing is, in that images and gestures lept of the page while the rustling of skirts, the lilt of a flute and the baying of sheep resonated in the air.Deeply rooted in family loyalty and sacrifice, the heart of this story is truly beautiful. The Garner family is bound by an unbreakable bond of love that is evidenced in all that they do and say. None of them can overcome the burden of hurt, guilt, or fear without the family embracing them and help guide their steps when their own strength is not sufficient. Flawlessly intertwined into this is a faith journey that is constantly at work beneath the surface, but comes about organically.Regina Jennings also exercised her funny bone on occasion to the enrichment of the story. The interplay between Rosa and Wes had some purely comedic moments that added to the complexity and romance of their relationship. Rosa brands her resilience and and fortitude as a shield to protect her vulnerable heart from further devastation, which is not unlike Wes’ self imposed isolation and desperate need to protect all within the Garner family fold. As the layers are stripped back, these characters expose the rawness of their emotions and heart without pretense.
There is so much more to this story and I encourage you to discover it for yourself. A sensational debut novel!
