About the Book
Adelaide Proctor is a young woman with her head in the clouds, longing for a real-life storybook hero to claim as her own. But when a husband-hunting debacle leaves her humiliated, she interviews for a staid governess position on a central Texas sheep ranch and vows to leave her romantic yearnings behind.
When Gideon Westcott left his privileged life in England to make a name for himself in America’s wool industry, he never expected to become a father overnight. And five-year-old Isabella hasn’t uttered a word since she lost her mother. The unconventionality of the new governess concerns Gideon–and intrigues him at the same time. But he can’t afford distractions. He has a ranch to run, a shearing to oversee, and a suspicious fence-cutting to investigate.
When Isabella’s uncle comes to claim the child–and her inheritance–Gideon and Adelaide must work together to protect Isabella from the man’s evil schemes. And soon neither can deny their growing attraction. But after so many heartbreaks, will Adelaide be willing to get her head out of the clouds and put her heart on the line?
Does this sound familiar: handsome, wealthy, young bachelor seeks governess for his sweet young child and falls in love? Yea, it did to me too. But, this book has enough intrigue, humour, romance, and heart that kept my attention and had my fingers turning pages.
Adelaide and Gideon are an endearing couple (if not a little too perfect at times) that bring charm and life to this story. I admired Adelaide’s spunk and identified with her love of the classics and her romantic wishings. Gideon is charm personified that would make any woman fall in love with him for his adoption and adoration for Isabella.
I wished that there were more details about how Gideon was chosen and agreed to become Isabella’s guardian, and how they were able to develop a father-daughter relationship so quickly. The suspense elements of this story were somewhat predictable and cliche, but added good tension to the overall plot. The story was not as tame as I expected it to be, and in a good way.
Karen Witemeyer has charmed her way on to my bookshelf with her historical romances. If you are a dreamer and hopeless romantic, than this is a book (and author) to check out. I am looking forward to reading her next book.
